5 Best Tips on Moving

5 Best Tips on Moving 1) Moving Containers – Press’n Seal & Boxes Save money on boxes and time packing by leaving any drawers intact. For example, remove a dresser drawer, leave the clothes in place and simply put Press'n Seal or masking tape over the top to create your own box. Get creative when looking for boxes using: baskets, laundry bins, suitcases, storage bins, carry-on bags and hampers to pack your stuff can make the move easier. For heavier objects head to your liquor store (like you needed another excuse) and ask for a handful of boxes. These were once used to carry heavy bottles of liquid and make great moving boxes. Bonus: they normally have handles in them as well. 2) Friends Make the World go Round Sure you could try and convince your friends to come and help you all day with the promise of pizza and beer, but it makes a lot more sense to plan a few different shifts for your friends. Not only will this make it easier to convince them to come, generally too many people can actually be counterproductive. 3) Disconnection Times Change your address at least two weeks prior to vacating your current residence. This will help ensure you receive all of your bills and other mail. Call your cable, internet, electricity and gas providers, at least a week ahead of your move, to figure out when you need to shut everything off. Make sure you leave enough time in your schedule to gather any necessary items — like cords, remotes, or cable boxes — you may need to return. About a week before you move, cancel any daily home deliveries, lawn services, and any other services you pay for. 4) Time to De-clutter Resist the temptation to take absolutely everything with you. This might sound obvious, but don’t take things you don't need, or use, to your new place. The less you have to pack, move and organize, the easier your move will be. If you haven't used an item in about a year and it doesn't have sentimental value, set it free. Kijiji, Craigslist and eBay are all great websites to sell off belongings you don’t need. Of course if you have too many items, a good old fashioned yard sale could do the trick; as well as donating what you can to those in need. Even suggesting giving them to your moving buddies is a great way to lighten the load of things you’ll be moving. 5) Cleaning This is absolutely key. Go to your new place early, if possible, and give it a good scrub down; nothing feels better than moving all your belongings into a freshly cleaned place. Once complete, take all the cleaning supplies and put them in a clear bin labeled “First Day Essentials”. Be sure to add trash bags, box cutter, scissors, disinfectant wipes, paper towels, paper plates, paper cups, dish soap and hand soap. Make sure to place this bin in your vehicle so there’s no chance of it getting lost amongst the boxes.
