Moving to Calgary from Out of Province? Tips for a Smooth Transition

Drummer Realty and Property Management Team

Relocating to a new city is a major decision, but when that city is Calgary and your support team is Drummer Realty and Property Management, you’re already off to a solid start. Whether you're making the move from B.C., Ontario, or across the Prairies, we've put together this information to help you settle in smoothly (and maybe even enjoy the process)!

1. Understand the Cost of Living in Calgary

One of the best parts about Calgary? No provincial sales tax. Combine that with reasonable home prices (especially compared to Vancouver or Toronto), and you’ll find your dollar goes further here.

But a few heads-ups:

  • Heating costs spike in winter, so make sure to budget for them
  • Car insurance and childcare might differ from your current rates
  • Income tax rates between provinces vary

Want help understanding how these numbers affect your budget or investment? Kevin, our Senior Property Manager and Director of Business Development, can make sure you’re not stepping into any surprises. He’s known for keeping things running like clockwork, and not just on paper.

2. Pick the Right Calgary Neighbourhood

Calgary is a city of diverse and distinct neighbourhoods, and choosing the right one is key to a successful move. Here's a quick breakdown:

  • NW Calgary – Great for families, close to the University of Calgary and parks
  • SW Calgary – Mature communities, big trees, and close to Glenmore Reservoir, and a quick drive to the mountains
  • SE Calgary – Up-and-coming, with newer homes and family-friendly vibes
  • NE Calgary – A multicultural hub with excellent transit access, proximity to the Calgary International Airport, and a growing number of affordable housing options.

  • Inner-city gems like Inglewood or Beltline – Perfect for urban explorers and professionals

At Drummer Realty, we know Calgary inside out. Sean, our President and Managing Broker, has been doing this work for over 30 years, has lived in Calgary his entire life, and doesn’t take nonsense from anyone, especially when it comes to protecting your interests in a fast-moving market!  You want results? Sean makes things happen.

3. Know Your Rental Rights in Alberta

Alberta has its own rules when it comes to renting, and they might not be what you're used to. Here's a quick crash course:

  • Security deposits are capped at one month’s rent
  • 30 days’ notice is typical for lease termination
  • Leases fall under Alberta’s Residential Tenancies Act

Don't want to deal with the fine print? That’s where Kevin shines again. He handles tenant relations, legal compliance, and building maintenance like a pro. If you’re looking for turnkey property management in Calgary, he's your guy.

4. Switch Over Your Driver’s License & Vehicle Registration

Once you're in Calgary, you’ve got 90 days to change over your license and plates. You’ll need:

  • Proof of Alberta address
  • Your current license
  • A vision test (and possibly a knowledge test)
  • A vehicle inspection if you're bringing a car from another province

It’s a bit of a bureaucratic hurdle, but once it’s done you’re officially part of the Wild Rose Country.

5. Prep for Winter…Seriously!

If you’re not used to -30°C mornings (yup, that’s not a typo), Calgary winters can be a shock. The good news? It's also one of the sunniest cities in Canada so while it’s cold, it’s rarely grey.

Here’s what to do:

  • Install winter tires on your vehicle
  • Buy proper gear: parka, boots, gloves..the works!
  • Make sure your home’s furnace and insulation are solid

Planning to rent or buy? We'll make sure your property is winter-ready. Trust us, you don’t want to learn that lesson the hard way.

6. Explore Schooling and Childcare Options Early

Calgary has fantastic public, Catholic, and private school systems, plus French immersion, IB programs, and charter schools. That said:

  • School zoning matters as your address determines eligibility
  • Daycares and preschools may have waitlists
  • Paperwork takes time, so apply early

Moving with kids? Marnie, our General Manager, is the best you’ll ever deal with! Organized, experienced, and the reason our office runs like a well-oiled machine. She’ll help you stay two steps ahead while you focus on settling your family.

7. Get Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to make a new city feel like home is to get out there and connect. Calgary is full of events, people, and places that make it more than just a place to live.

Here’s how to plug in:

  • Join local Facebook groups or parent networks
  • Attend events like Calgary Stampede, GlobalFest, and Taste of Calgary
  • Visit parks like Fish Creek or Nose Hill
  • Explore local cafés, breweries, and art walks

We’re not just about property, we’re about community. And we’re always happy to share the best spots with you.
